Life is hard for Reuben Stein. Orphaned and living with a resentful family that begrudges him so much as a kind word, Reuben longs for a better life, but something always hinders his efforts. Desperate for comfort, Reuben turns to his mother's Bible and soon learns that the events in his life he thought were hindrances were actually opportunities in disguise!
Soon Reuben has a new outlook on life; and with the words of his mother's Bible to guide him, he hopes to bring some happiness to the same people who once did him the most harm.
This edition of the classic 1898 Christian novel includes a biography of the author.

At the beginning of this story Reuben is aged fourteen and is living with the Hardman’s. He was born “up north”, but his parents moved south to Florida for Reuben’s mother’s health. Sadly, his parents died of the yellow fever and the Hardman family took him in. They are very poor and can barely feed themselves let alone a growing boy, but they took him in. They don’t love him and he works long hours in exchange for a mean bed, mean clothes, and meaner meals. He is starved of love, or even a kind word and decides he will run away. His mother taught him to read and write and by chance he comes across an advertisement for a job that would suit him down to the ground. Unfortunately, he is delayed on the way to his appointment, by stopping to do a kindly deed, and misses out on the job, which actually turns out to be a blessing in disguise. After several more disappointments, and some unexpected kindness from Nancy, a daughter of the Hardmans, Reuben has remembered his mother’s teaching and his Sunday-school lessons. He begins reading his mother’s Bible and dedicates his life to Christ. Everything seems to go wrong after that, with Mr Hardman and Nancy both being harder than usual to please, and then he remembers some Bible verses he learnt by heart a few years ago and one of them in particular he decided was especially for him, and as it also tied in with something his father used to say, he decided he would try to live his life according to those precepts.
Then Mr Hardman’s brother-in-law, Uncle Kastor, who has always been kind to Reuben tells him he has spoken to the new teacher, Mr Kensington, who wants a boy to live with his family and do chores in exchange for going to school. As this is what Reuben has always wanted, he leaps at the chance and after an interview with Mr Kensington, it is decided he will move the very next day. Upon his return to the Hardmans, however, he finds an even better offer from Judge Fenning, but such is his integrity he explains that he has already committed himself.
The story continues with Reuben entering a completely different way of life, and learning more than he ever dreamed of. He doesn’t forget Nancy Hardman and manages to have changes made to her life. This particular book seems aimed at a teenage audience and like all of Alden’s books, has a strong Christian theme, as well some moralising. I have read many of Alden’s books and enjoyed them, and although this one is not a favourite, it did make me chuckle and also tear up a bit in places. A solid four-star, written for younger readers, say, ten to sixteen year old, although there is no reason adults can’t read it too.
